LONDON (Worthy News) – Britain’s King Charles III’s official job description has effectively changed from stressing his role as “Head of the Church of England and Defender of the Faith” to describing the monarch as Supreme Governor of the Church of England who “protects the space for Faith” within Britain’s “multi-faith nation.”
The revised wording appears to broaden the sovereign’s religious responsibilities from defending “the Faith” of Christianity to embracing several faith communities, including non-Christian religions, under a newly published Buckingham Palace definition of his duties.
“His Majesty is Supreme Governor of the Church of England and protects the space for Faith within the multi-faith nation,” according to the amended description in the Royal Family’s Sovereign Grant Report 2025–26
The update replaces last year’s account of the king’s role as “Head of Nation,” when the report also referred to him as “Head of the Church of England and Defender of the Faith.”
INTERFAITH DIALOGUE
Before Charles’ coronation, there was debate over whether he would adopt the title “Defender of Faith” rather than the traditional “Defender of the Faith,” reflecting his long-standing commitment to what he calls “interfaith dialogue.” In the end, he retained the historic title.
Observers say Charles has placed greater emphasis than many of his Christian predecessors on reaching out to followers of other religions, including Islam, Judaism, Sikhism, Hinduism, and other “faith communities.”
“For many here, and for myself, the Christian faith is a firm anchor and daily inspiration that guides us, not only personally, but together as members of our community,” he told the U.S. Congress in April this year.
“Having devoted a large part of my life to interfaith relationships and greater understanding, it is that faith in the triumph of light over darkness which I have found confirmed countless times,” Charles explained.
BIBLICAL CONCERNS
“Through it I am inspired by the profound respect that develops as people of different faiths grow in their understanding of each other,” he added.
Critics argue that the palace’s revised language , together with Charles’ emphasis on interfaith dialogue, appears at odds with the historic Christian teaching of the Church of England.
They point to the King James Version of the Bible, where Jesus says in John 14:6: “Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me.”
Biblical scholars argue that the verse leaves no room for alternative religious paths to God as manifested in Jesus Christ.
OTHER PALACE DEVELOPMENTS
Separately, the palace disclosed that Charles paid 12.9 million pounds ($16.1 million) in income and capital gains taxes during the 2024–25 financial year.
Officials also confirmed that King Charles III and Queen Camilla will not move into Buckingham Palace after its 369 million-pound ($487 million) refurbishment is completed.
Instead, they will remain at nearby Clarence House.
However, officials emphasized that Buckingham Palace will remain the ceremonial and operational headquarters of the British monarchy
